Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. When she was a little girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word"association. Ford was interested in the acting profession during her teenage years and she was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place at the third time made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford did not finish her studies until 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
